Webinar series

AlphaFold in practice: research use cases

Exploring research applications through case studies

This webinar series explores how researchers are using AlphaFold and predicted protein structures to address diverse biological questions. Through four research use cases, speakers will share how AlphaFold predictions can be integrated with experimental and computational approaches, including machine learning, transcriptomics, virtual screening and genome annotation.

The series will highlight practical examples of how predicted protein structures can contribute to understanding molecular mechanisms, investigating antimicrobial resistance, identifying potential molecular interactions and supporting functional and structural annotation.

The webinars making up this series are listed below. Follow the links to find out more about each webinar. You will need to register for each webinar you would like to attend. Recordings will be made openly available for all webinars on their individual pages.

Webinars

Who is this series for?

This webinar series is aimed at researchers, graduate students, early-career scientists and other professionals interested in using AlphaFold and predicted protein structures in biological research.

The series may be particularly relevant to:

  • Bioinformaticians, computational biologists and structural biologists
  • Microbiologists and researchers working on antimicrobial resistance
  • Researchers working in drug discovery, molecular docking and identification of potential therapeutic targets
  • Researchers working with genomics, transcriptomics, systems biology and other omics approaches
  • Researchers interested in integrating AI-based structural predictions with experimental and computational data
  • Researchers working on gene structure prediction and annotation, particularly in non-model eukaryotic species

The series will also be relevant to those interested in exploring emerging and less conventional applications of AlphaFold beyond protein structure prediction.

Outcomes

By the end of this webinar series, you will be able to:

  • Describe how AlphaFold-predicted protein structures can be used to address a range of biological research questions.
  • Interpret AlphaFold predictions and associated confidence metrics in the context of specific research applications.
  • Explain how AlphaFold predictions can be integrated with other biological data and computational approaches, including genomics, transcriptomics, experimentally determined structures, machine learning and molecular docking.
  • Recognise how predicted structures can support downstream applications, including investigation of molecular mechanisms, virtual screening, identification of potential molecular targets and gene structure annotation.
  • Evaluate the strengths and limitations of AlphaFold-predicted structures for different research applications and recognise when complementary evidence is needed.
  • Identify approaches, tools and computational workflows presented in the case studies that could be adapted to their own research questions.
