Course Overview

This course will provide participants with an introduction to functional genomics resources at EMBL-EBI, in particular to ArrayExpress, one of the ELIXIR core data resources.

The course will focus on accessing and interpreting data relevant to their research areas of interests. It will also explain how to submit functional genomics data (e.g. microarray expression profiling, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq) to a public repository such as ArrayExpress and the importance of data standards for functional genomics. Activities will include interactive presentations by the trainer and practical exercises to give the trainees hands on experiences.

Audience

This course is for bench-based (wet-lab) researchers of any career stage, who want to explore and use EMBL-EBI functional genomics resources for their research. No knowledge of programming is required, but the trainer expects an undergraduate level knowledge of biology and/or biochemistry.

Learning outcomes

After this course you should be able to:

  • Recall some public data services that EMBL-EBI provides
  • Comprehend the importance of data management practice and the value of biocuration
  • Describe the source of data in ArrayExpress database, and how to search for data of interest effectively
  • Submit your own data to ArrayExpress through Annotare
