Course Overview

This workshop has been organised for PhD students within the Department of Biology and Biotechnology, to provide them with and introduction and hands-on experience of EMBL-EBI resources for genome browsing, exploring protein interactions and reaction pathways.

The sessions are aimed at Bench biologists who have no prior experience in bioinformatics, but need to start exploring these resources for their research.  No knowledge of programming is required, but an undergraduate level knowledge of Biology / molecular biology would be beneficial.

Modules and resources

During this course you will learn about:

  • Interactions and Pathways: IntAct, Complex Portal and Reactome
  • Ensembl

Learning outcomes

After this course you should be able to:

  • Navigate a molecular interaction database, reviewing the alternative data formats and the various tools designed to work with them
  • Explore reactions and pathways using specialised tools
  • List the data types available in Ensembl and how to access them
  • View and explore data in the Ensembl browser
