UniProt functional annotation for Q9HTJ1

UniProt code: Q9HTJ1.

Organism: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (strain ATCC 15692 / DSM 22644 / CIP 104116 / JCM 14847 / LMG 12228 / 1C / PRS 101 / PAO1).
Taxonomy: Bacteria; Proteobacteria; Gammaproteobacteria; Pseudomonadales; Pseudomonadaceae; Pseudomonas.

Function: Involved in the biosynthesis of the osmoprotectant glycine betaine. Catalyzes the irreversible oxidation of betaine aldehyde to the corresponding acid. In P.aeruginosa this reaction is a compulsory step in the assimilation of carbon and nitrogen when bacteria are growing in choline or choline precursors. Can use NADP(+) with similar efficiency to NAD(+), a property that can be used by the bacterium to produce the NADPH needed to combat the oxidative stress imposed by the host defenses. {ECO:0000255|HAMAP-Rule:MF_00804, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11104673, ECO:0000269|PubMed:21732915}.
