triterpene cyclases. (a) Bacterial SHC converts the linear
triterpene squalene to hopene or diplopterol [Seckler and
Poralla 1986]. (b) Eucaryotic 2,3-oxidosqualene cyclase
transforms the 2,3-epoxide of squalene to lanosterol, a
metabolic precursor of cholesterol and steroid hormones.
