Access to eduroam

To use eduroam you do not need a wireless token, shared key or web login. Your laptop or mobile device is configured with a username and password provided by your home institution. When you connect to an eduroam network, your credentials are securely proxied from the visited site to your home institution.

eduroam on the Genome Campus

The eduroam wireless network is provided on campus by the Sanger Institute for use by campus staff and visitors. See http://eduroam.hinxton.org.

eduroam for visitors

Visitors and collaborators should apply to their home institution for eduroam access and support. The EBI cannot provide eduroam accounts for visitors. The WTGC campus network will continue to be available with wireless tokens for visitors without eduroam access.

eduroam for EBI staff

EBI staff can register for an eduroam account for their personal use. You will be issued with a special eduroam password which you use to configure your mobile device. You do not have to renew your EBI eduroam account, it remains valid until you leave the EBI or reset your password.

Using eduroam

A correctly configured device will connect automatically to an eduroam network, thought it may take a few seconds for the authentication process to complete. You should never enter your eduroam credentials into a website login or captive portal as it won't work, and your credentials may be stolen.

eduroam users are bound by the Acceptable Use Policies of the visited site, your home site, and the JANET roaming service. Network usage is monitored, please be considerate and do not consume excessive bandwidth. Most visited sites allow outgoing internet access for web browsing, ftp, ssh, secure email sending and receiving. They will block incoming and many outgoing ports for security reasons.

Your eduroam account is for your own use only, and you are responsible for all network activity carried out using your credentials. If you configure eduroam on a shared or borrowed laptop or device, please delete the configuration before you give the device back. If you lose a device configured for eduroam, or suspect your credentials have been compromised, please reset your eduroam password immediately at https://www.ebi.ac.uk/systems-srv/eduroam/registration.php

Help

For eduroam support, you should contact your home organisation. For EBI users, please contact desktop@ebi.ac.uk and not the helpdesk at the visited organisation.
