Shock caused by infection; frequently caused by gram negative bacteria, although some cases have been caused by other bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa; characterized by fever, chills, tachycardia, tachypnea, and hypotension. Shock is a state of acute circulatory failure characterized by persistent arterial hypotension despite adequate fluid resuscitation or by tissue hypoperfusion unexplained by other causes.
