Summary for family C36

Family type peptidaseC36.001 - beet necrotic yellow vein furovirus-type papain-like peptidase (beet necrotic yellow vein virus), MEROPS Accession MER0002121 (peptidase unit: 1283-1389)
Content of familyPeptidase family C36 contains a putative papain-like peptidase.
History Identifier created: Perspect.Drug Discov.Des. 6:1-11 (1996)
Beet necrotic yellow vein virus RNA 1 contains an ORF of which the translation product contains a methyl transferase domain, an NTP-binding/helicase domain, a polymerase domain and a putative peptidase domain.
Catalytic typeCysteine
Active site residuesC1293 H1384
Active siteThe putative peptidase domain was identified on the basis of sequence similarity to papain (Koonin et al., 1992, Rozanov et al., 1995).
Activities and specificitiesHehn %et al (1997) have demonstrated autocatalytic cleavage of the Beet necrotic yellow vein virus RNA 1 translation product into 150kDa and 66kDa fragments. This cleavage is thought to occur between the helicase and polymerase domains and is predicted to be 600 amino acids from the C-terminus of the protein, based on comparison with other alphavirus papain-like peptidases.
Molecular structure
Clanunassigned
Basis of clan assignmentPredicted active site residues for members of this family and family C1 occur in the same order in the sequence: C, H.
