Families of Inhibitors
A family is a set of homologous peptidase inhibitors. The homology is shown by a significant similarity in amino acid sequence either to the type inhibitor of the family, or to another protein that has already been shown to be homologous to the type inhibitor, and thus a member of the family. The relationship must exist in the inhibitory unit at least. A family can contain a single inhibitor if no homologues are known, and a single gene product can contain several inhibitory domains, which may be assigned to different identifiers or even families. Each family of inhibitors has an identifier formed from the letter "I" followed by a unique number. A family may be divided into subfamilies when there is evidence of a very ancient divergence within the family.
