Genome-wide duplication event plays an important part in evolution of the SCNA (sodium channel alpha-subunit) gene family. The number of SCNA genes encoding Nav1 proteins in mammals and teleosts (fish) are similar -eight versus nine, respectively. They code for transmembrane Nav1 proteins that allow the sodium influx required for action potential generation in excitable cells [PMID: 16830092].
