These membrane proteins are involved in magnetite crystal formation within magnetosome organelles. They are not essential for biomineralization, but play a major role in controlling the size and shape of magnetite crystals. Loss of these proteins results in crystals that are approximately 75% of wild-type size with altered morphology. They are multi-pass membrane proteins associated with the magnetosome membrane and exhibit cumulative, partially redundant functions in regulating crystal growth. This family includes proteins from organisms that are not known to contain magnetosomes suggesting that this family of proteins have a broader function.</p>","llm":false,"checked":false,"updated":false}],"wikipedia":null,"literature":{"PUB00105539":{"PMID":17965152,"ISBN":null,"volume":"190","issue":"1","year":2008,"title":"The major magnetosome proteins MamGFDC are not essential for magnetite biomineralization in Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense but regulate the size of magnetosome crystals.","URL":null,"raw_pages":"377-86","medline_journal":"J Bacteriol","ISO_journal":"J Bacteriol","authors":["Scheffel A","Gardes A","Grunberg K","Wanner G","Schuler D."],"DOI_URL":null},"PUB00106120":{"PMID":22716969,"ISBN":null,"volume":"85","issue":"4","year":2012,"title":"The magnetosome membrane protein, MmsF, is a major regulator of magnetite biomineralization in Magnetospirillum magneticum AMB-1.","URL":null,"raw_pages":"684-99","medline_journal":"Mol Microbiol","ISO_journal":"Mol Microbiol","authors":["Murat D","Falahati V","Bertinetti L","Csencsits R","Kornig A","Downing K","Faivre D","Komeili A."],"DOI_URL":null},"PUB00093606":{"PMID":24816605,"ISBN":null,"volume":"196","issue":"14","year":2014,"title":"Genetic dissection of the mamAB and mms6 operons reveals a gene set essential for magnetosome biogenesis in Magnetospirillum gryphiswaldense.","URL":null,"raw_pages":"2658-69","medline_journal":"J Bacteriol","ISO_journal":"J.
