This bacterial enzyme catalyses the reversible interconversion of UDP-GlcNAc and UDP-ManNAc. The latter is used in a variety of bacterial polysaccharide biosyntheses. cf. EC, UDP-N-acetylglucosamine 2-epimerase (hydrolysing).
