IntEnz Enzyme Nomenclature
EC 4.99.1.1

Names

Accepted name:
protoporphyrin ferrochelatase
Other names:
ferro-protoporphyrin chelatase
heme synthase [ambiguous]
heme synthetase [ambiguous]
iron chelatase [ambiguous]
protoheme ferro-lyase
ferrochelatase [ambiguous]
Systematic name:
protoheme ferro-lyase (protoporphyrin-forming)

Reaction

Comments:

The enzyme catalyses the terminal step in the heme biosynthesis pathways of eukaryotes and Gram-negative bacteria. The reaction is catalysed only in the reverse direction.
