Unlike EC (glycine/sarcosine N-methyltransferase), EC (sarcosine/dimethylglycine N-methyltransferase) and EC (dimethylglycine N-methyltransferase), this enzyme, from the halophilic methanoarchaeon Methanohalophilus portucalensis, can methylate glycine and all of its intermediates to form the compatible solute betaine [1].
