Introducing the 6th consecutive Facilities day hosted by the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA) and taking place in October 2017. Facilities Day is a meeting and networking event which invites representatives of sequencing facilities to participate in discussions and share their views on the impact of ENA as a global sharing platform for sequencing data and how it promotes bioinformatics research. Participants will have the opportunity to exchange ideas directly with ENA project leaders and influence future developments towards sustaining and improving the ENA service.

Participant Demographic

We are drawing delegates from the many scientific groups who submit data, or have some other invested interest in the European Nucleotide Archive. These delegates are using traditional Next Generation Sequencing and newer technologies such as single molecule sequencing platforms, synthetic long read technology, single molecule high throughput restriction enzyme optical mapping and single cell sequencing. Other delegates will be experts in retrieving data from the ENA to analyse and incoporate into their own portals and public services.

Delegates to the ENA Facilities day are involved in fields as diverse as:

  • Pathogen and disease outbreak tracking
  • Environmental microbial biodiversity (human gut/gastrointestinal, skin microbiome, marine bacterioplankton communities, microbe-host interactions, co-evolution of the microbiota and host)
  • Infectious diseases, diagnostics, public health, immunology, inflammatory diseases
  • Evolutionary biology and ancient sources of DNA
  • Cancer genetics, human variation and mutation diseases
  • Gene Regulation and Expression
  • Livestock genomics

The meeting takes place over an afternoon and a morning. The afternoon is reserved for participants to present a topic of their choice and discuss the use of sequencing technologies in driving notable research. During the following morning we will discuss the challenges of big data archiving and the significance of public data access.

A large part of the event will be dedicated to discussion and we will be looking for ideas and advice from the experts (the participants).
