XX CC Bacillus cereus E33L was originally isolated from a swab of the CC carcass of a dead zebra suspected of having died of anthrax in the CC Etosha National Park, Namibia, April 1996. The identification of CC the isolate as B. cereus was made by P.C.B. Turnbull and given the CC designation E33L. B. anthracis was not isolated from the swab. CC Phylogenetically, the E33L isolate is the closest Bacillus isolate CC to the B. anthracis branch so far identified. B. cereus is CC ubiquitous in the environment and has been associated with many CC different types of infections since 1898. B.cereus associated CC pathology includes both diarrheal-type and emetic-type food CC poisoning (Bacillus cereus toxins. Turnbull, PCB. Pharmac Ther CC 13:453-505 1981).The pathogenicity of B. cereus is due to the CC production of several toxins, including emetic toxin, enterotoxins, CC phospholipases, proteases and hemolysins (Bacillus cereus and CC related species. Drobniewski, FA. Clin Microbiol Rev 6(4):324-338 CC 1993). Plasmid and fosmid libraries were prepared at the Joint CC Genome Institute in Los Alamos (JGI-LANL), NM. Shotgun sequencing CC was performed at the JGI Production Genomics Facility (JGI-PGF) in CC Walnut Creek, CA to a coverage of 31x. Finishing was performed at CC JGI-LANL and 5 plasmids ranging in size from 5kb to 467kb were CC identified. One of these, designated pE33L8, is described in this CC record. Gene predictions were obtained using Glimmer. Basic CC analysis of the gene predictions was performed by comparing coding CC sequences against the COGs, Pfam, BLOCKS and Prodom databases. Gene CC definitions and gene names were added manually by a team of CC annotators at JGI-LANL, using BLAST results in addition to CC information from the basic analysis. Eight open reading frames CC were identified on this 8191 bp sequence.
