The volume represents a small part of the worm's tissue (containing 5 symbionts). We used worms that were fixed using the high pressure freezing protocol outlined in Gallet et al. 2004. Focused Ion beam Scanning Electron Microscopy (FIB-SEM) tomography was performed with a Zeiss CrossBeam 550 microscope (Zeiss, Germany) as in Uwizeye et al 2021 and Rao et al 2025. For each slice, a thickness of 10nm was removed and SEM images were recorded with a corresponding pixel size of 10nm in order to obtain an isotropic voxel size (voxel size is 10x10x10nm). Entire volumes were imaged with 800–3000 frames for the worm. The first steps of image processing were performed using Fiji software for registration (adapted StackReg plugin), and noise reduction (3D mean function of the 3D suite plugin).","book_chapter_title":null,"publisher":null,"publication_location":null,"journal":"bioRxiv","journal_abbreviation":"","issue":null,"preprint":true}],"dataset_size":"164.9 GB","experiment_type":"FIB-SEM","scale":"tissue","entry_doi":"10.6019/EMPIAR-13648"}}
