The experiment was conducted during April - September in the filed and a greenhouse located in a geographical region with latitude of 30039N, longitude of 104005E and altitude of 500 m asl. The seeds of SARII-658 germinated indoors for screening twin-seedlings, which subsequently were pairwise planted in field in April. During the flowering stage, twin-seedlings with low seed-setting rates were selected out and the upper parts (about 2/3) of the tillers were cut off. The remaining parts were separated into two equal halves, one of which was pairwise rooted in fresh water supplemented with a little urea for ploidy confirmation. The other half was transplanted into an experimental greenhouse for ratoon growth. Plants were cultured in a tank (100×60×20 cm) filled with sand. Hoagland nutrient solution was used to irrigate the plant. The water level maintained at 3 to 5 cm above the sand surface. Air temperature was maintained at 30 oC at day time and 20 oC during night. Relative humidity (RH) ranged from 50% to 80%. Light/dark photoperiod and light intensity were about 13/11 h and 1,100 μmol•m-2•s-1 at noon, respectively. The nutrient solution was replaced every 3 to 7 days.
