International applicants

We continue to recruit internationally regardless of Britain’s transition out of the European Union.

Science is international

Over 3/4 of our workforce has joined us from outside the UK and we are proud of the diverse and multicultural working environment we offer.

Working at EMBL-EBI, you will join an inclusive community of 850+ amazing employees from 78 countries.

How does Brexit impact EMBL-EBI?

Our funding

We are funded directly by our member states, but we also benefit from a wide range of European Commission (EC) grants.

Brexit does not affect EMBL’s relationship with the EC, so EMBL-EBI staff will continue to be eligible for EC funding.

Hiring European candidates

We are hiring internationally, continually diversifying the skills and experience of our staff.

We are supported by the UK Government to attract, relocate and offer job opportunities to candidates from around the globe, including from European countries.

Our scientific collaborations

International collaboration is at the core of what we do.

Our researchers and technical staff collaborate intensively with scientists around the world and the UK’s decision to leave the EU will not change how we work.

Moving to the UK

Our team is ready to support you throughout your transition to ensure you and your family are settling well.

Work and live in the UK

Due to our special status as an International Organisation anyone who joins us from outside of the UK, and their dependent family members, can apply for an exempt vignette. The exempt vignette entitles you to live and work in the UK while working for EMBL-EBI.

Working rights for your legal partner

An exempt vignette allows your legal partner to work in the UK as well. Cambridge has a thriving job market and was ranked one of the highest UK cities for employment opportunities in 2020. See Glassdoor ranking.

Your children: Schools and education

You will have the choice of International Schools in Cambridge or a wide variety of highly-regarded Government funded or private schools across the local area. See our family benefits

Yearly salary review

Every year we review our staff’s salaries taking into account UK cost of living increases to ensure your pay remains competitive.

EMBL-EBI’s international status

Learn about our funding

EMBL-EBI is not formally linked to the European Union. The UK’s membership of EMBL is independent of its membership of the EU. EMBL was established by international treaty between its member states, not all of which are members of the EU.
