Human Cell Atlas: Opportunities

Human Cell Atlas opportunities

EMBL-EBI, together with the Broad Institute and the UCSC Genomics Institute and supported by the Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), is building a cloud-based data coordination platform for the Human Cell Atlas (HCA), an ambitious initiative will change the way we think about anatomy.

We are looking for bioinformaticians, software engineers and developers with a passion for science to help build this multi-cloud platform.

What is the Human Cell Atlas?

Cells are the most fundamental unit of life, yet we know surprisingly little about them. They vary enormously within the body, and express different sets of genes. Without maps of different cell types and where they are located in the body, we cannot describe all their functions and understand the biological networks that direct their activities.

A complete HCA will give us a unique ID card for each cell type, a three-dimensional map of how cell types work together to form tissues, knowledge of how all body systems are connected, and insights into how changes in the map underlie health and disease. It would allow us to identify which genes associated with disease are active in our bodies and where, and analyse the regulatory mechanisms that govern the production of different cell types.

The HCA will be freely available to scientists all over the world, transforming the fundamental understanding of human development and the progression of diseases. The new Data Coordination Platform will enable scientists to check, share and analyse the vast amounts of diverse information generated.

Interviews and selection process

We currently plan to conduct interviews during the week commencing 24 July 2017. These will be in panel format, at EMBL-EBI on the Wellcome Genome Campus, near Cambridge in the UK.  Directions to the Genome Campus

Selected candidates would ideally start on 1 September 2017. That said, everyone’s circumstances are different so the start date may be delayed with the agreement of the team leader.
