EMBL Insight Lecture: Ageing and diseases – what is the link?

A free event for schools organised by EMBL, ELLS. Dame Janet Thornton will be discussing the link between ageing and diseases. Booking required.

Join us at the Wellcome Genome Campus this December for the EMBL Insight Lecture. The lecture is given annually by scientists working at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). The aim of the lecture is to inform young people about current trends in life science research and to show how research is influencing our everyday lives. This year's lecture is being given by the eminent Professor Dame Janet Thornton, who will touch on topics such as DNA, variation and gene expression.

The event is suitable for post-16 students.

The lecture can be attended at the Kendrew Lecture Theatre, Wellcome Genome Campus, Hinxton. Travel Bursaries are available to help fund travel to the campus.

Post-lecture optional activities

  • Open Lab - An immersive experience where students can explore DNA sequencing and the science taking place on campus
  • Career Speed Dating - Students will meet staff, scientists and researchers from the campus and can quiz them about their careers and day-to-day work
  • Genome Gallery - Students explore our new exhibition, Empowering people: Genetic counsellors in focus, facilitated by a member of the Wellcome Genome Campus Connecting Science team.
13:45 - 14:30 The Kendrew Foyer is available for students to eat a packed lunch

Janet Thornton

Biography

Professor Dame Janet Thornton was Director of EMBL-EBI from October 2001 to June 2015, and played a key role in ELIXIR, the pan-European infrastructure for biological data, since its inception. Her research group focuses on understanding protein structure (function and evolution) and ageing using computational approaches. After a physics degree she completed her PhD at the UK NIMR before post doctoral studies at Oxford. She then held a joint appointment at University College London and the Bernal Chair in the Crystallography Department at Birkbeck College. Professor Thornton is a Fellow of the Royal Society, a Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences, a member of EMBO and a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.

The Kendrew Lecture Theatre in EMBL-EBI's South Building, situated with a view towards the amphitheatre, seats 150 people. The lecture theatre is equipped with three cameras for recording events remotely.
