Course Overview
What will I learn?
Day 1 -Ensembl
- To learn about genome annotation with a focus on vertebrates and other eukaryotes
- Practical experience in data mining approaches based on BioMart
- To gain an understanding of selected bioinformatics databases and projects (OMIM, GO, dbSNP, etc.)
- How to look at comparative genomics data (gene trees and homologies) and sequence variation across populations
Day 2 - UniProt, InterPro and IntAct
- To understand the specialised sequence search tools within the InterPro database and how they are used to predict protein classification and function
- To browse the InterPro database, learning about the type of annotation it contains
- To understand the differences between the major protein sequence databases
- To browse the UniProt database in detail, learning about its structure and the type of data it contains
- To learn the different ways to access sequence data (sequence search, text search...)
Day 3 - PRIDE, ChEBI, Reactome
- To learn learn how to search for small molecules and understand their chemical ontology and associated bioactivity data
- To learn about structure representation and search algorithms
- To understand how to extract bioactivity data to construct potential structure-activity relationships
- To understand and review the different experimental approaches and the importance of bioinformatics in MS
- To learn how to browse and retrieve data from the PRIDE public repository of proteomics data
- To gain practical experience integrating proteomics data with other resources using the PRIDE BioMart
- To learn how to submit data and identify your peptides

A limited number of travel fellowships are available for SLING roadshows. Fellowships are only applicable to persons travelling from outside the host institute and attending for the full duration of the course. Fellowships cover a maximum EUR500 per person towards the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence. If you wish to be considered for a fellowship please indicate this on your registration and complete a bursary application form.
Bursary application form click here for pdf version
Only complete bursary applications received before the bursary deadline of 11 March 2011 will be considered. Selection will take place within 3 weeks of this date and successful applicants will be notified before close of final registration on 15 April 2011.
The goal of the Bioinformatics Roadshow is to provide training for researchers within the host country and its immediate neighbours. We therefore restrict travel bursaries to researchers based in these countries. Researchers from beyond these countries who require training may wish to consider coming to an EMBL-EBI course. If a significant number of researchers from one institute require training, we encourage you to consider hosting your own Bioinformatics Roadshow.
