Course Overview

What will I learn?

  • To learn how to navigate the EBI website and the different ways to access and retrieve data.
  • To understand the differences between the major nucleotide sequence databases.
  • To understand the differences between the major protein sequence databases.
  • To browse the UniProt database in detail, learning about its structure and the type of data it contains.
  • To understand the specialised sequence search tools within the InterPro database and how they are used to predict protein classification and function.
  • To understand the principles of nucleotide and protein sequence searching, multiple alignments, and an introduction to phylogenetics.
  • To get an introduction to genome annotation.
  • To gain practical experience in data mining approaches based on BioMart.

A limited number of travel fellowships are available for SLING roadshows. Fellowships are only applicable to persons travelling from outside the host institute and attending for the full duration of the course. Fellowships cover a maximum EUR500 per person towards the cost of travel, accommodation and subsistence. If you wish to be considered for a fellowship please indicate this on your registration and complete a bursary application form.
