ESPODs: EBI-Sanger Postdoctoral fellowships

Call for Applications and self-defined projects

EMBL-EBI and the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute share the Wellcome Trust Genome Campus. This proximity fosters close collaborations and contributes to an international and vibrant campus environment.

Researchers are supported by easy access to scientific expertise, well-equipped facilities and an active seminar programme.

The EBI–Sanger Postdoctoral (ESPOD) Programme builds on the strong collaborative relationship between the two institutes, offering projects which combine experimental (wet-lab) and computational (dry-lab) approaches.

Projects may be selected from pre-defined areas or you may propose your own project. In the case of self-defined projects, the area of work must have the agreement of the EMBL-EBI and Sanger group leaders involved.

Application and selection

The deadline for 2012 applications is Wednesday 15 August 2012.

Interviews and selection will take place on Monday 24 September 2012.

Fellowships will be awarded after a competitive selection process, with applications being linked to specific projects defined in advance of the application deadline.

Available projects:
Bertone/Liu – Systematic Characterisation of Sanger Human iPS Cells (SH-iPSCs)
Birney/Soranzo – Modelling the Genetic-Epigenetic Regulatory Pathways in Hematopoietic Cells
Enright/Yadav – Genes, Pathways, Modules and Organs that Regulate Bone Mass
Goldman/Berriman – Comparative Genomic Insights into Parasite Genome Function
Marioni/Logan – Adaptive Evolution of Olfactory Systems in Mammals

To apply, please send the following to tandrew@ebi.ac.uk :

  1. A cover letter specifying the project you wish to apply for
  2. Your CV and two references
  3. A project proposal if you opt to propose a new project (n.b. you do not need to propose a project if you are selecting if from the list above). Describe your project in 1000 words or fewer. You will need the approval of the EBI and Sanger group leaders involved before you submit your application.

Interviews will include one-to-one discussions with the group leaders involved as well as a panel interview.

Fellowships typically begin in mid-October. Although the start date may be delayed with the agreement of the group leaders, the ESPOD must be undertaken within 12 months of the fellowship being awarded.
