Maria Fotaki is Director in Biotechnology in European Patent Office in Munich, Germany. Maria graduated from the Biology Department, Univ. Patras, Greece and completed her Doctoral thesis in Medical Biochemistry, Univ. of Calgary, Canada. She carried out research in Gene Therapy in Montreal General Hospital and in Pharma Research, Hoffmann La-Roche, Basel, Switzerland. Maria joined the EPO in 1997 in Biotechnology Cluster in the field of Peptides , Genes, Gene Therapy and Cells. As patent examiner she dealt with cases such as the ICOS (EPO Official Journal 6/2002, p. 293) and the WARF case (human embryonic stem cells). She has given presentations on Biotechnology patentability requirements, EPO Case Law development and participated as EPO delegate in the IP5 working group "IT-supported Business Processes".
