Meeting Overview
The identification of orthologs, genes in different species that are evolutionarily the closest, has become a critical prerequisite for many research projects, including important medical/pharmaceutical applications. Efficient identification of orthologs remains a challenge, compounded by the lack of a ‘gold standard’ proteome set. This workshop will address these issues by bringing together leaders and junior researchers in the field with the aims of improving the newly available ‘gold standard’ dataset, evaluating alternate approaches to ortholog identification, improve interoperability among orthology databases, and improve orthology-based protein function inference.

Tentative Meeting Schedule
The meeting will be organised in two parts:
1. Classical format with talks (and, if required, posters)
2. Workshop sessions
The meeting starts on Fri 17th June with a lunch at noon and will finish on Sunday afternoon (17:00). We can use the James Watson Pavillion for the duration of the meeting as well as the loft rooms on Sunday for parallel sessions (workshops).
The current list of topics is:
● Genomic-scale datasets, and implications for orthology detection
● Methods for orthology detection
● Applications of orthology
and the workshop sessions we have identified are:
● Reference datasets and benchmarking
● Standardized formats
● Function assignments
● Handling Alternative Transcripts
● Strategies for assessing similarity
● Determination of functional ncRNA orthology
