Train online

Free online courses

Photo of experimental researcherIf you work in the life sciences, you may find that you’re spending less time doing experiments and more time analysing huge amounts of biological data. Train online is here to help you do this quickly and efficiently.

Train online provides free courses on Europe's most widely used data resources, created by experts at EMBL-EBI and collaborating institutes. You do not need to have any previous experience of bioinformatics to benefit from this training. We want to help you to be a highly competent user of our data resources; we are not trying to train you to become a bioinformatician.

You can use Train online to learn in your own time and at your own pace. You can repeat the courses as many times as you like, or just complete part of a course if you want to brush up on how to perform a specific task.

Train online was created for you. If it doesn’t do what you want it to, or if you have any suggestions as to how we can improve it, please tell us.

A resource for bioinformatics trainers

Photo of EBI trainingAre you involved in Bioinformatics Training? If you are involved in training other researchers how to use Europe's most widely used data resources, you may spend significant amounts of time developing and customising your own training courses. Finding appropriate examples that reliably demonstrate the functionality of the data resources can be quite a challenge: we know this because we dedicate a lot of time doing this ourselves!

We make our course materials openly available to trainers. You are welcome to use any of the courses, examples, exercises or quizzes for training purposes.

You might also be interested in visiting the Bioinformatics Training Network, a community website for bioinformatics trainers that enables you to share, update and comment on course materials.

Please tell us how you used our courses and whether they were useful to you. We warmly welcome feedback about any aspect of Train online.

How is Train online funded?

Train online is funded by EMBL and by funds awarded to the EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute by the European Commission under SLING, grant agreement number 226073 (Integrating Activity) within Research Infrastructures of the FP7 Capacities Specific Programme.
