About this Course

This joint EBI-Wellcome Trust workshop provides hands-on training in the use of public databases for peptide analysis, annotation of subsequent protein lists using these resources, incorporation of information from molecular interaction and pathway databases, and the use of protein 3D-structure data in proteomics experiments. The workshop is aimed at research scientists with a minimum of a degree in a biological discipline, including laboratory and clinical staff as well as specialists in related fields. The practical elements of the course will take raw data from a proteomics experiment and analyse it in order to go from MS spectra, identify peptides and finally to lists of protein identifiers that can be analysed further using a wide range of resources. The aim is to provide attendees with the practical bioinformatics knowledge they need to go back to the lab and process their own data (including large datasets) when collected.
Acceptance to the course will be subject to a selection process.

Topics include

  • Mass Spectroscopy Basics and MS Search Engines
  • Sequence databases and their use
  • Gene Ontology as a data classification tool
  • Using ontologies to annotate data
  • Standardising proteomics data
  • PRIDE - The Proteomics Identification Database
  • The IntAct molecular interactions database
  • Reactome - placing proteins in pathways
  • InterPro - identifying possible functions
  • Protein 3-D structure data and proteomics
  • Proteomics data and services integration

Cost

The course tuition fees are subsidised by the Wellcome Trust for scientists based in non-commercial institutions anywhere in the world. This is a residential course, without exception, and there is a fee of £500 for non-commercial applicants towards accommodation and food for the duration of the course. The fee for commercial applicants is £1500. Limited bursaries are available for academics (50 per cent of fee) and are subject to open competition. Features of the residential course

EMBL-EBI is located on The Wellcome Trust Genome Campus, Hinxton, near Cambridge. With the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute as our nearest neighbour we are arguably situated within the world's largest concentration of genomics and bioinformatics expertise.

Hands-on training at the EBI takes place in our state-of-the-art training facilities. Expert trainers lead you through the course programme which is designed to balance instruction with practical exercises. Lunch and coffee breaks are factored into the course programme, allowing you to pose questions to the trainers, to network with the other course delegates or simply to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

For our residential courses, you will stay on-site in the Residential Court, part of the Wellcome Trust Conference Centre on the beautiful 55 acre campus. All rooms are comfortably furnished, with digital televisions, complimentary wireless LAN connections, telephones and en suite facilities.

The three-course evening meals in the restaurant at the Grade II listed Hinxton Hall provide another opportunity to interact with course participants and trainers. Head Chef, Josh Fox, recently won the UK final of the IACC Copper Skillet Challenge 2009. After dinner, course delegates have the option of finishing off the day in the cosy bar, exploring the grounds or strolling the short distance through campus to the local village pub in Hinxton.
