Overview

This Summer School is aimed at early-stage researchers who are embarking upon bioinformatics-based projects with little or no experience in computational biology. This course will provide early-stage graduate students and researchers with practical training in bioinformatics in the context of biological research and its theory. The course provides training on the fundamental concepts underpinning the topics of sequence searching, alignment, phylogenetics, functional genomics, interactions and pathways. This Summer School will involve hands-on training in using widely-available software packages and data resources; therefore we are limiting the number of participants to 35. Please note that the course will not cover aspects of computer programming and you should look at our other specialist courses if you want specific help with your current research project.

Outcomes

After this course you should be able to…
• Search for sequences effectively
• Interpret alignments
• Interpret phylogenetic trees and appreciate their limitations
• Browse, retrieve and analyse gene expression data
• Know how to explore interactions and pathways using relevant tools and resources
• Use widely available public repositories and resources to help to answer biological questions
