SME Bioinformatics Forum, Piemonte Bioindustry Park, Italy
We would also like to acknowledge support from the European Council of Bioregions (CEBR) and UK Trade & Investment for disseminating information about this event to member organisations.
All tools and services provided by EMBL-EBI are available free of charge.
Please seewww.ebi.ac.uk for more information about the projects.
The EMBL-European Bioinformatics Institute is the outstation of EMBL with the primary responsibility to provide bioinformatics services to European researchers. Our Mission is:
- To provide freely available data and bioinformatics services to all facets of the scientific community in ways that promote scientific progress
- To contribute to the advancement of biology through basic investigator-driven research in bioinformatics
- To provide advanced bioinformatics training to scientists at all levels, from PhD students to independent investigators
- To help disseminate cutting-edge technologies to industry
As part of our support for industry, we have established an annual series of information workshops based in differing locations in Europe. These workshops are designed to allow SMEs to hear about molecular and genomic databases and services that are provided freely by EMBL-EBI and our collaborators, to understand the international data sharing agreements underlying these data resources and the road map for future developments.
The workshop will provide the opportunity to introduce the tools and data resources that are available and the opportunities for SMEs to use and integrate these resources in order to derive business benefit from the existing and developing infrastructure.
The topics of the workshop have been specifically selected on the basis of previous interactions with SMEs, priorities specified by SMEs as part of a recent user survey and discussions with a regional focus group. The data resources and services include:
- Genomics resources and Ensembl Genome Browser
- Proteomics resources and UniProt
- Chemical resources (with a focus on the ChEMBL bioactivity database)
- EMBL-EBI Patent services and the non redundant patent sequence database
- Transcriptomics (ArrayExpress and the expression Atlas)
- Integration services and EBI Search
- Web services
There will also be an opportunity to hear from some companies based in the Piemonte region and for some hands-on tutorials. The registration costs for the workshop have been highly subsidised through the sponsorship of EMBL-EBI (a not for profit intergovernmental organisation) and BioPmed.

Travel Directions
Bioindustry Park lies in the municipality of Colleretto Giacosa, 5 minutes from Ivrea, the heart of Canavese, an industrial area of the province of Turin and the intersection point of the motorways connecting Turin, Milan and the tunnels under the Alps to France (Mont Blanc) and Switzerland (Great Saint Bernard).
Thanks to its geographical position, the Park can be easily reached from all major European cities by car, train and plane.
By car
The Canavese has a closely-knit motorway system guaranteeing connections with the most important Italian and European centres (A4/A5). France and Switzerland are 100 kilometres away passing through Mont Blanc, Great St. Bernard and Frejus tunnels.

By plane
In addition to domestic flights, the international airport Torino Caselle has daily flights to Paris, London, Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart and Zurich. Caselle can be reached in 30 minutes from the park. Other suitable airports are Linate (150 km away), Malpensa (125 km) and Genova (180 km), all of them linked to Ivrea by motorway.
