Joint EBI-Wellcome Trust Summer School
This course has been organised with additional support from ENFIN:

Is it right for me?
This Summer School is aimed at early-stage researchers with little or no experience in computational biology. This course will provide PhD students, postdocs and clinician-scientists with practical training in bioinformatics in the context of the latest biomedical and biological research. This course also aims to serve as a forum for the interchange of ideas and expertise between database providers and their users. This Summer School will involve hands-on training in using the data resources, therefore we are limiting the number of participants to 35.
Trainers include:
William Pearson, Virginia University, USA
Des Higgins, University College Dublin, Ireland
Ewan Birney, EMBL-EBI, UK
Alvis Brazma, EMBL-EBI, UK
Gabriella Rustici, EMBL-EBI, UK
Anton Enright, EMBL-EBI, UK
Gerard Kleywegt, EMBL-EBI, UK
Nicolas Le Novere, EMBL-EBI, UK
What will I learn?
- A broad introduction to bioinformatics data resources (including, but not limited to, EBI core resources) through lecture- and practical-based sessions.
- To understand when, why and how to use public data resources for molecular biology.
- Practical experience of using the databases, using a range of widely applicable case studies.
What will it cover?
- An Introduction to Bioinformatics
- Concepts, historical milestones and the central place of bioinformatics in modern biology
- Bioinformatics Databases, Tools and Institutions
- Sequence Similarity and Homology
- Concepts and tools
- Sequence analysis
- Phylogenetics
- Genomes and Expression data
