Bioinformatics resources for immunologists - Cambridge, United Kingdom
This workshop is funded by the NATURIMMUN project, an EU 7th Framework Marie-Curie Training Grant, Network for Initial Training.
This workshop aims to provide an overview of bioinformatics tools and data resources available from the EBI which can be of benefit in immunological research.
The course will be a mixture of taught and practical sessions, providing students with ‘hands-on’ experience of a range of tools and databases which can aid in the interpretation of immunological data in light of other biological information.
Audience
This workshop is for wet-lab PhD immunology students within the NATURIMMUN project. Participants should be confident in the use of PCs and Internet browsing, no previous knowledge of bioinformatics is required.
Modules and Resources
This workshop will combine the following EBI modules:
- Introduction to the EBI
- Sequence Searching and Alignment
- Ensembl Browsing
- Protein Sequence Databases
- Protein Function and Classification
- Interactions and Pathways
- Small Molecules in Bioinformatics
- Protein Structures
More information on the content of these modules can be found here: http://www.ebi.ac.uk/training/roadshow/modules
Two additional special lecture sessions will cover:
- Interpretation of phylogenetic trees
- Variation and disease databases
Learning Objectives
After this course you should be able to:
- Identify relevant tools and resources to address a set of immunological questions;
- Search EBI databases for information or biological sequences using a variety of techniques;
- Use appropriate EBI resources to aid in the interpretation of relevant biological data;
- Apply the tools and resources explored during the sessions to your own research.
