UniProt functional annotation for P0A0M0

UniProt code: P0A0M0.

Organism: Staphylococcus aureus.
Taxonomy: Bacteria; Firmicutes; Bacilli; Bacillales; Staphylococcaceae; Staphylococcus.

Function: Staphylococcal enterotoxin that activates the host immune system by binding as unprocessed molecules to major histocompatibility (MHC) complex class II and T-cell receptor (TCR) molecules via their alpha domain, in particular TRAV27 (PubMed:12682246, PubMed:17709482, PubMed:21081917). In turn, this ternary complex activates a large number of T-lymphocytes initiating a systemic release of proinflammatory cytokines (PubMed:12682246, PubMed:10586065). Causes also the intoxication staphylococcal food poisoning syndrome. The illness characterized by high fever, hypotension, diarrhea, shock, and in some cases death (PubMed:16213675). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10586065, ECO:0000269|PubMed:12682246, ECO:0000269|PubMed:16213675, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17709482, ECO:0000269|PubMed:21081917}.

Cofactor: Name=Zn(2+); Xref=ChEBI:CHEBI:29105; Note=Binds 1 zinc ion per subunit. The zinc ion is necessary for interaction with host MHC class II molecules. {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10586065, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11432818};
Subunit: Interacts with host MHC class II molecules composed of alpha/HLA-DRA and beta/HLA-DRB1 chains (PubMed:11432818, PubMed:21081917, PubMed:10586065). Interacts with host TCR alpha-chain TRAV27 (PubMed:17709482, PubMed:21081917). {ECO:0000269|PubMed:10586065, ECO:0000269|PubMed:11432818, ECO:0000269|PubMed:17709482, ECO:0000269|PubMed:21081917}.
Subcellular location: Secreted.
Similarity: Belongs to the staphylococcal/streptococcal toxin family. {ECO:0000305}.
