The enzyme is a heterodimeric protein consisting of small and large subunits. The small subunit contains three iron-sulphur clusters. These clusters were called proximal, median and distal according to their distance from the catalytic site and were proposed to provide an electron transfer pathway from the catalytic site to cytochrome C3. This is the proximal FeS (PMID7854413).
