Literature Report

IntroductionHexokinase catalyzes the first step of glycolysis, the phosphorylation of glucose by ATP to produce glucose 6-phosphate (G6P). In brain tissue and the red blood cell, type I hexokinase regulates glucose metabolism.
MechansimThe 6-hydroxyl group of Glucose is 3A from the gamma-phosphorus atom and oriented for an in-line displacement reaction. Asp657 is a catalytic base. It abstracts a proton from the 6-hydroxyl group, activating the oxygen, which then attacks the gamma-phosphorous. This leads to lysis of the phosphodiester bond forming G6P and ADP.
