Description

This superfamily includes glycerate kinase 2 (EC:2.7.1.31), which catalyses the phosphorylation of (R)-glycerate to 3-phospho-(R)-glycerate in the presence of ATP. There are two glycerate kinases in E. coli, known as GKI and GKII [PMID: 4887503] and GKII is encoded by glxK [PMID: 5325263].

The structure of the glycerate kinase consists of two different alpha/beta domains. The first domain has a Flavodoxin-like fold (52171): three layers (alpha/beta/alpha) with parallel beta-sheet of five strand. The second domain is similar to the Restriction endonuclease-like fold (52979): three layers (alpha/beta/alpha) with mixed beta-sheet of five strands, and is inserted into the first one.
