This entry includes a beta subunit of the immunoproteasome, known either as beta1i, beta9 or LMP2 (MEROPS identifier T01.013). Induced by gamma-interferon, the catalytic subunits of the proteasome, beta1c, beta2c and beta5c, are replaced with beta subunits 1i, 2i and 5i, respectively, to form the immunoproteasome [PMID: 11265247]. Beta1i has a similar caspase-like specificity to that of beta1c, but is sensitive to different synthetic inhibitors [PMID: 19050304, PMID: 20812720].
