The lipid-binding protein (LBP) family can be divided divided in four subfamiles. Subfamily I comprises proteins specific for vitamin A derivatives, and can be subdivided into the cellular retinoic acid-binding proteins (CRABP-I and II) and the cellular retinol-binding proteins (CRBP-I, II, III, and IV) [PMID: 15234551].

Cellular retinol binding protein 1 (CRBP-I) is thought to be essential for vitamin A metabolism and synthesis of retinoic acid [PMID: 10487743, PMID: 10839978].
