PURbeta belongs to the purine-rich element binding (PUR) protein family, which consists of PURalpha, PURbeta and PURgamma. PURalpha and PURbeta are DNA-binding proteins that play a role in cell growth and differentiation by modulating both transcriptional and translational controls of gene expression [PMID: 17612644]. They are linked to the repression of genes such as smooth muscle alpha-actin (SMalphaA), alpha-myosin heavy chain, and beta-myosin heavy chain [PMID: 12933792, PMID: 19496623].
