ATP-binding cassette subfamily A member 5 (ABCA5) belongs to the ABC transporter family, whose remembers are full-length transporters organised in two tandem halves, each with a hydrophobic TMD followed by a cytoplasmic NBD [PMID: 23103747].

In mice, ABCA5 localises to lysosomes and late endosomes. It is linked to lysosomal disease [PMID: 15870284]. In humans, it may have a role in tumour development [PMID: 17541169]. ABCA5 in the brain seems to function as a cholesterol transporter associated with amyloid-beta peptides generation [PMID: 25125465].
