Solute carrier family 26 member 9 (SLC26A9) has been reported to have both a Cl- channel and a Cl-/HCO3- exchanger activity [PMID: 17120765]. It also seems to exhibit a unique function among the SLC26 members, as its anion transport activity was shown to be coupled to cation transport (Na+/anion transport) [PMID: 19365592].

SLC26A9 is predominantly expressed in the lung and stomach, and to a lower degree in kidney [PMID: 11834742, PMID: 15800055, PMID: 19365592]. Inactivation of SLC26A9 in mice led to loss of gastric acid secretion [PMID: 19004773]. In the airway, SLC26A9 mediated Cl- secretion in response to airway inflammation induced by IL-13 [PMID: 22945630]. In the kidney, SLC26A9 is required for the regulation of both renal salt excretion and blood pressure [PMID: 23149824].
