Family relationships

Glia maturation factor gamma (GMFG) belongs to the GMF family, whose members sever actin-Arp2/3 complex branch junctions by a cofilin-like mechanism [PMID: 23727094, PMID: 23897816]. Mammals express two GMF isoforms, GMF-beta and GMF-gamma, which display different tissue distributions [PMID: 14980447]. GMF-gamma is expressed in microvascular endothelial and inflammatory cells, and has been implicated in promoting neutrophil and T cell migration [PMID: 16873721, PMID: 23677465]. GMF-gamma may facilitate smooth muscle contraction through regulating actin dynamics [PMID: 24818551].
