The maintenance of normal serum phosphate concentration is critical for many biological processes including bone mineralization and cell function. Phosphate is reabsorbed in kidney mainly through the type 2A sodium-phosphate cotransporter (NPT2A, also known as SLC34A1) [PMID: 19190675]. Mutation in NPT2A can result in nephrolithiasis and osteoporosis [PMID: 12324554].
