Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 1 (Nrf1, also known as NFE2L1) belongs to the CNC-bZIP family, which is a group of transcription factors that are activated in response to cellular stress [PMID: 24448410]. Nrf1 up-regulates expression of antioxidant genes by binding to the antioxidant response elements (AREs) present in the promoter of these genes. In humans Nrf1 exists in two forms, p120 and p110. p120 is embedded in the ER membrane, while p110 is soluble and can enter the nucleus [PMID: 19665035, PMID: 23144760].
