Prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 (IPR029576)

Short name: COX-2

Overlapping homologous superfamilies

Family relationships

Prostaglandin G/H synthase 2 (also known as cyclooxygenase-2, COX-2) converts arachidonate to prostaglandin H2 (PGH2), a committed step in prostanoid synthesis [PMID: 16373578]. COX-1 and COX-2 are the two cyclooxygenase isozymes targeted by the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) [PMID: 14630509, PMID: 24819536]. COX-2 is a major inflammatory mediator and is involved in neuroprotective actions [PMID: 24819536, PMID: 20868723].
