Family relationships

Description

Calpain-8 (CAPN8) belongs to the calpain family, which consists of a group of Ca2+ dependent cysteine proteases that regulate functions of substrates by proteolysis [PMID: 12843408, PMID: 24085852]. Calpain-8 and Calpain-9 are predominantly expressed in the gastrointestinal tract and are restricted to the gastric surface mucus (pit) cells in the stomach. They are involved in gastric mucosal defence [PMID: 17646163, PMID: 20686710].
