Visinin-like protein 2 (VILIP-2, also known as hippocalcin-like protein 4) belongs to the visinin-like protein (VSNL) family, which consists of VILIP-1, VILIP-2, VILIP-3, hippocalcin, and neurocalcin delta [PMID: 22357717]. They are a group of calcium sensor (NCS) proteins that are involved in the Ca(2+)-dependent signalling cascades in nerve and cancer cells [PMID: 18989702]. VILIP-2 and Ca(2+)-binding protein-1 (CaBP1) modulate P/Q-type Ca(2+) currents through Ca(V)2.1 channels, and this contributes to the short-term synaptic plasticity [PMID: 23027954].
