Family relationships

Podocin is a new member of the stomatin family that is expressed in glomerular podocytes (located in the Bowman's capsule of the kidney). It interacts with CD2AP and nephrin and plays a role in the regulation of glomerular permeability [PMID: 10742096, PMID: 16889564, PMID: 11562357]. Podocin is present in high-order oligomers and may serve a scaffolding function linking tight junction proteins to the actin cytoskeleton in nephrotic foot processes [PMID: 11733557, PMID: 17675666].
