Family relationships

This entry represents desmoplakin from metazoans.

Desmosomes are a class of anchoring junctions that couple cytoskeletal elements to the plasma membrane at cell-cell or cell-substrate adhesions [PMID: 15561586]. The components of desmosomes include cadherins, armadillo proteins and plakins [PMID: 15561586]. Desmoplakin belongs to the plakin family, which includes plectin, envoplakin and periplakin. It mediates intercellular adhesion in tissues (such as skin and cardiac muscle) subjected to mechanical stress and serves as an anchoring site for the intermediate filament (IF) system [PMID: 17499243]. Desmoplakin also plays an important role in embryogenesis and some non-desmosomal endothelial junctions [PMID: 11222147].
