Family

Plakophilin-3 (IPR028434)

Short name: Plakophilin-3

Family relationships

Description

Armadillo repeat proteins mediate protein-protein interactions in diverse cellular processes. Plakophilins are members of the armadillo multigene family. They are essential components of the desmosomal plaque (a cell structure specialised for cell-to-cell adhesion), where they interact with desmosomal cadherins as well as the cytoskeletal linker desmoplakin [PMID: 16765467].

Like plakophilin-1 and -2, plakophilin-3 displays a dual intracellular location. Plakophilin-3 is present in nuclei and desmosomes of epithelial cells, suggesting involvement in both desmosome-dependent adhesion and signaling pathways [PMID: 10381383].
